Industrial AI & Smart Factory Acronyms & Standards Glossary

A definitive peer-to-peer executive reference decoding the architectures, protocols, mathematical physics, and European regulatory standards governing modern industrial operations.

Architecture & Digital Standards

6 terms

Foundational architectural patterns, standards, and digital twin models governing modern smart manufacturing.

UNS

Unified Namespace

Standard: Architecture Pattern (ISA-95 Part 1 Hierarchy)

The central, event-driven message fabric where current manufacturing data, metrics and states are organized into one structured topic hierarchy in real time. Replaces point-to-point polling with decoupled publish/subscribe distribution; historians and MES remain the systems of record.

ISA-95

Enterprise-Control System Integration

Standard: ANSI/ISA-95 / IEC 62264 (Part 1 updated 2025)

The international standard for integrating enterprise and control systems. Its Part 1 equipment hierarchy is Enterprise → Site → Area → Work Center → Work Unit (production lines and cells are kinds of work centers and units). Many Unified Namespaces use it as their topic naming convention.

Production Physics & Optimization

6 terms

Core physical laws, line synchronization methodologies, and financial metrics governing manufacturing throughput.

TOC

Theory of Constraints

Standard: Goldratt, The Goal (1984)

The management philosophy of Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt, built on the insight that a plant can produce only as fast as its constraint operation. An hour lost on the constraint is an hour lost for the entire system.

Throughput Accounting Cash Flow Mathematical Formulation
Δ EBITDA ≈ Δ Constraint Units Sold × (Unit Price − Truly Variable Cost) − Δ Operating Expense
Δ Units Sold: Extra output from a higher constraint OEE, counted only if the market buys it
Throughput per unit: Price minus truly variable costs, such as materials and purchased services
Δ Operating Expense: Any extra cost of running the change, such as overtime or the pilot itself
DBR

Drum-Buffer-Rope

Standard: TOC Operational Execution

The classic TOC scheduling methodology: The Drum (the beat of the constraint machine dictating plant capacity), The Buffer (time & space inventory protecting the constraint from starvation), and The Rope (an upstream gating signal that releases raw materials strictly at the Drum's consumption rate).

WIP

Work-in-Progress

Standard: Little's Law (Operations Research)

The total inventory of semi-finished components currently in production between raw material release and finished packaging. Governed by Little's Law: Lead Time = WIP ÷ Throughput. Overproducing WIP directly inflates lead times and ties up cash flow.

Little's Law • Production Physics Mathematical Formulation
Lead Time (LT) = Work-In-Progress (WIP) ÷ Throughput Rate (TH)
Lead Time (LT): Average cycle duration from raw material launch to final packaging
WIP: Total active inventory of semi-finished parts in the production line
Throughput (TH): Pace of finished production, set by the constraint asset
OEE

Overall Equipment Effectiveness

Standard: ISO 22400-2 / SEMI E79

The gold standard manufacturing efficiency KPI calculated as Availability (%) × Performance (%) × Quality (%). Measured at the constraint, each OEE point is extra plant output; whether it avoids capex depends on demand and margin.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness Mathematical Formulation
OEE (%) = Availability (%) × Performance (%) × Quality (%)
Availability: Actual Operating Time ÷ Planned Production Time (downtime loss)
Performance: Operating Speed ÷ Nameplate Speed (micro-stops and slow cycles)
Quality: Defect-Free Units ÷ Total Units Started (scrap and rework loss)
FTFR

First-Time Fix Rate

Standard: Maintenance & Reliability KPI

The percentage of maintenance and repair work orders successfully resolved on the technician's initial attempt without requiring follow-up interventions, secondary spare parts, or rework.

Maintenance Reliability Metric Mathematical Formulation
FTFR (%) = (First-Time Corrective Resolutions ÷ Total Dispatches) × 100
First-Time Fixes: Work orders completely resolved on initial technician dispatch
Total Dispatches: Aggregate corrective maintenance interventions in evaluation period

Industrial Protocols & Edge Networking

5 terms

The transport protocols, industrial fieldbuses, and serialization formats connecting physical machines to software.

RBE

Report-by-Exception

Standard: Event-Driven Telemetry Practice

An industrial networking transmission pattern where edge devices publish telemetry only when a state change occurs or a deadband threshold is crossed, cutting network traffic substantially compared with cyclic polling (vendor-reported ranges of roughly 80–95%, depending on how often values change).

Automation & Enterprise Software Tiers

5 terms

The physical controllers, supervisory control rooms, execution engines, and corporate software layers.

Industrial AI & Knowledge Graphs

6 terms

Grounded retrieval architectures, ontologies, and safety guardrails powering safer, source-grounded shopfloor AI.

KG-RAG

Knowledge-Graph-Grounded Retrieval (often called GraphRAG)

Standard: W3C Semantic Standards (RDF/OWL, SHACL)

An advanced AI architecture that grounds Large Language Models in physical Knowledge Graphs (equipment topologies, active BOM revisions, real-time UNS state) so technicians receive guidance traceable to verified engineering sources, with far lower hallucination risk. Not the same as Microsoft's GraphRAG, where an LLM builds an entity graph from documents.

Vector RAG

Vector Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Standard: Cosine Similarity / Dense Embeddings

Standard text retrieval searching across arbitrarily chunked PDF documents. Prone to version-blindness, boundary slicing and wrong-revision answers in physical manufacturing environments.

Vector Retrieval • Cosine Metric Mathematical Formulation
Cosine Similarity (u, v) = (u · v) ÷ (||u|| × ||v||)
u · v: Dot product measuring linguistic cosine angle between embedding vectors
Physical Flaw: Measures text proximity; it does not encode physical topology, revision dates or live PLC safety interlocks

Cybersecurity, Safety & EU Compliance

8 terms

Hardware protection perimeters, European sustainability mandates, and personal executive liability frameworks.

IEC 62443

Security for Industrial Automation Systems

Standard: IEC / ISA Standard

The international series on security for industrial automation and control systems. Its risk assessment for system design (Part 3-2) partitions systems into Zones and Conduits, each with a target Security Level (SL 1 to SL 4).

Cyber-Physical Risk Equation Mathematical Formulation
Cyber Risk = Likelihood × Consequence (compared with tolerable risk to set SL-T)
Likelihood: Lowered by limiting the paths in: outbound-only flows, and data diodes on critical conduits
Consequence: Limited by segmentation, so an incident in one zone does not spread to the next
SL-T: Target security level chosen for each zone from that comparison
NIS2

Network and Information Security Directive 2

Standard: European Union Directive 2022/2555

The EU directive (in force since January 2023) requiring in-scope essential and important entities, including many manufacturers, to manage cybersecurity risk and report significant incidents: a 24-hour early warning, a 72-hour notification and a final report within one month. Management bodies must approve the measures and can be held liable.

PCF

Product Carbon Footprint

Standard: ISO 14067 / GHG Protocol

The cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emissions (kg CO2e) calculated for an individual manufactured item or serial number, with the manufacturing share measurable from machine-level energy data.

ISO 14067 Product Footprint Mathematical Formulation
PCF (kg CO₂e) = Materials (Upstream) + Manufacturing Energy + Process & Transport
Materials: Supplier PCF data, ideally received as their AAS Carbon Footprint submodels
Energy: Metered kWh per order × the electricity emission factor
Process & transport: Direct process emissions and inbound logistics, per the PCF rules that apply
